How To Properly Clean Your Crystal Wine Glasses
Share
High-quality wine glasses deserve proper care to maintain their brilliance and ensure the best wine experience. Follow these essential guidelines to keep your crystal glasses spotless and in pristine condition for years to come.
DISHWASHER CLEANING
Many crystal wine glasses are dishwasher-safe and, under proper conditions, can endure multiple wash cycles without losing their clarity or shine.
Loading the Dishwasher:
-
Ensure there is enough space between the glasses so they do not touch each other or other objects.
-
If possible, place your glasses on the top rack and use the glass holder if your dishwasher has one. This keeps them secure and prevents movement during the wash cycle.
-
Some glasses may be too tall for the top rack. If so, carefully place them in the bottom rack, following the same spacing precautions.
-
For added protection, use the Dishwasher Stemware Saver, specially designed to keep your wine glasses stable and prevent breakage. Available in our store at This link.
-
Avoid direct contact with metal utensils, which can cause scratches.
Dishwasher Settings:
-
Use the correct amount of detergent and rinse aid as instructed on the product labels. Never overdose.
-
Extremely soft water can damage glass over time. Adjust your dishwasher’s water softening system to approximately 3-4° dH (German hardness scale).
-
Choose a low-temperature program (50-55°C) or a specific glassware program if available.
-
After the cycle ends, open the dishwasher door to release steam and prevent excess moisture from affecting the glass surface.
-
Avoid washing aluminum kitchenware (e.g., garlic presses, pots with aluminum handles) together with your glasses, as this can cause a chemical reaction that leads to glass corrosion.
HAND WASHING & DRYING
If you prefer hand washing, follow these steps to ensure optimal care:
Hand Washing:
-
Use warm water and mild dish soap to clean your glasses gently.
-
Avoid excessively hot or boiling water, as sudden temperature changes may weaken the glass.
-
Rinse thoroughly with clear water to remove any detergent residue.
Drying & Polishing:
-
Always use two large microfiber cloths to dry and polish the glass.
-
Never hold the bowl and stem simultaneously while drying, as twisting pressure can cause breakage.
-
Hold the bowl with one hand and polish the inside and outside with the second microfiber cloth.
-
Hold the base with one hand while polishing to ensure stability.
-
Avoid drying your glasses upside down on metal racks, as this may damage the rim.
-
Do not use regular tea towels, as they can leave lint and potentially scratch the glass.
-
We recommend using high-quality microfiber polishing cloths, which should be washed at 60°C/140°F without fabric softener to maintain their effectiveness.
-
Never place microfiber cloths in the tumble dryer.
STORAGE TIPS
-
Store your glasses in a clean and dry cabinet, away from strong-smelling items, as glass can absorb odors, affecting the wine’s aroma.
PREVENTING GLASS CLOUDING
Over time, glasses may become cloudy due to mineral deposits or detergent residue. To prevent this:
-
Rinse your glasses immediately after use, especially if they contained acidic beverages like red wine.
-
If cloudiness occurs, soak the glass in a mild acid solution such as white vinegar or citric acid.
-
Avoid exposure to extremely hard or soft water, as both can contribute to clouding.
-
Unfortunately, glass corrosion (a white, irreversible coating on the surface) cannot be repaired, so proper washing techniques are essential.
By following these care instructions, your crystal wine glasses will maintain their brilliance and enhance every sip of wine. Cheers to impeccable glassware and unforgettable wine experiences!
